St. Mary's C of E Primary School

Young Carers

At St. Mary’s C of E Primary, we recognise that some children may be caring for someone at home, such as a parent, sibling, or another family member. These children are often called “young carers”. Caring responsibilities can sometimes affect a child’s learning, wellbeing, and time for play, and we want every pupil to feel supported and safe.

If you think your child may be a young carer, you are not alone. Many families manage caring responsibilities alongside school and everyday life. We encourage you to speak with us so we can understand your child’s circumstances and put the right support in place. This may include checking in with your child, offering additional help in school, or signposting to appropriate services in the local community.

We take a sensitive and confidential approach. Our aim is to ensure that your child can still enjoy school, build friendships, and access learning without feeling that they must carry responsibilities beyond their years. If you would like to discuss your child’s needs, please contact the school office to arrange a conversation with Mel Collier, our Young Carers Champion.
