COVID-19 Update 2

Dear Parents and Carers,

As you are all aware, the guidance that we receive from the government and Public Health England continues to be updated on a daily basis.  We are working hard on ensuring that St Mary’s adheres to the new guidance that is being issued.

You will have seen from the media that many countries have made the decision to close their schools and therefore there is an expectation that our country will follow suit.  However, at this stage, there have been no communications from the government to us to say that this is likely.  We have been directed to keep the schools open unless Public Health England tell us otherwise.  That said, we can only remain open if we have sufficient staff.  Due to the new guidelines on 14 day self-isolation, including for family members, the likelihood is that we will have a significantly reduced workforce in the coming weeks.  A decision to close the school due to a critically low staffing level will be made by the governing body in consultation with the Senior Leadership Team.

To enable us to manage this situation, we will take a phased approach:

       1. School open as normal

  • 5.Insufficient staff for safe opening of the site
  • School will be closed to all children
  • All non-self-isolating staff will attend school
  • 6. The school has been instructed to close by the Government
  • The school will be closed to all children and staff
  • Staff will be directed to work at home.
We are advised that, in the overwhelming majority of situations, there is absolutely no need to close schools, or send pupils or staff home.  Obviously, there would be action to be taken in the event of a positive test; Public Health England would advise us what is necessary.
As a precaution, we will be sending home-learning packs home in the next few days. There is no need to complete these unless your family begins self-isolating or the decision is made to close your child’s class. Work will also be posted by class teachers on the class pages of the school website on a regular basis as well as tasks set on Purple Mash and My Maths. Log in reminders for these will be sent home in due course.
We will continue to provide regular updates regarding this situation; however, if you are concerned please visit the NHS coronavirus webpage: or the Government coronavirus webpage:
Thank you for all your support, patience and understanding during this unprecedented time.  Please be reassured that the Governors and Senior Leadership Team are following the latest advice and will respond to it as best we can; the safety and welfare of our St Mary’s family is, as always, what matters most.
    Best wishes,
    Mel Collier
    Acting Headteacher
